Chapter Seventeen
Joe wasn’t sure where the last few weeks had gone. Ellie had taken her first few wobbly steps, holding on to the furniture to help her. There’d be no stopping her soon. He held out the spoonful of porridge, but she grabbed for the handle again, wanting to feed herself. This morning, however, he couldn’t give her the time she needed, so he made sure she ate all she wanted from the spoon. The doorbell rang. He lifted her up and carried her to the door.
“It’s all right, I’ll give you the rest in a minute.” He still found it hard to leave her on her own after what had happened, but he didn’t want to remember that night, because if he did, he thought about Aron, and he didn’t want to go there either. Aron occupied his dreams often enough without thinking about him during the day as well.
He opened the door and was greeted by a young man with a cheery smile. He hoped he’d made the right decision, allowing Jonno to talk him into this arrangement.
After Ellie’s illness, he’d found it hard to carry on with work. To begin with he wouldn’t trust anyone else to take care of her. He’d rung his father the morning after and arranged for Gwennie to deal with a couple of straightforward jobs. He’d expected his father to appear that morning. Instead, his mother had appeared.
She’d sat at the table and fixed him with a concerned stare. “Your father told me what happened. He also told me about this Aron. You could have told me. I know I haven’t always been there for the day to day stuff like your dad, but you’re my son, and all I want is for you to be happy. I needed to know that you and Ellie were all right. The government will survive without me for a few days.”
“You took leave?” Joe had asked.
“Is that so surprising?” He heard the hurt in her voice. When Angie had died, she’d been there for him. At times, he hadn’t been sure how she’d managed. There was no person who he admired more. Angie had been like her in many ways, both strong and confident, and not afraid to say what she thought.
“No, Mum, I didn’t expect it, that’s all, but I’m so pleased you’re here.”
“So tell me what we need to do. Gwennie said she’ll be over later to help. Your dad’s got a Heathrow run this afternoon, and he’s babysitting after the twins until Rosie picks them up later. I can mind Ellie while you work.”
“It was so scary last night, Mum.”
She stood and put her arms around him. “I know, love, but these things happen to little ones. You had a couple yourself when you got infections. She’ll be fine and at least you weren’t on your own. I’ll make us a mug of tea then you can tell me about him.”
“There’s nothing to tell now. I knocked it on the head for a few reasons.
